Johannesburg – Mixed emotions at Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre as thousands of Jabulani “Sjava” Makhubo’s fans gathered for two nights of his second solo shows following its debut at the Sun Arena in 2019. Having accumulated several accolades with his two albums, Isina Muva and Umqhele the sold-out shows were a celebration of his achievements.
The show which was initially meant to be held on the 29 February was extended to two nights due to popular demand following the tickets being sold out within a month. His mother, Thandiwe Makhubo and the MEC for KZN Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Nomusa Dube-Ncube got a chance to speak to the diehard fans who travelled from all over the country to see Sjava. Just like his first show, the host was Ukhozi FM’s Dudu Khoza.
He surprised his fans with an even grandeur entrance than the usual, which saw him say his famous clan names walking down the center aisle of the ICC with an army escorting him. On the two nights, he performed his much-loved songs such as Ikhandlela, Umama, Ngempela and Ugogo. An even bigger surprise for the audience was when Uzalo actors, Wiseman Mncube and Thobani Nzuza brought ‘Isibhamu’ to life in a short drama portrayed alongside Sjava just before the song was performed. The drama narrated the events of a hijacking, where Sjava was seen pleading with the hijackers not to shoot but to take whatever they wanted just to spare his life.
Legendary gospel singer, Hlengiwe Mhlaba says the world needs to see more of such shows.
“For me, this show was authentic and proudly South African, it was comprised of every genre in South Africa on one stage, the old and the young got to perform in one space. It was a world-class show, and I think everyone need to see it,” said Hlengiwe Mhlaba.
Sjava shared the spotlight with musicians such as Shwi, Tira, Ntencane, Thina Zungu Blaq Diamond, Mlindo The Vocalist, Lvovo Derrango, and poet Nhlanhla Mhlango, just to name a few.
“I love sharing the stage with great artists and I am glad that they all agreed to be part of the shows. I was happy to see the crowd loving all the acts including those of the up and coming ones. Above all, I am thankful to my fans for the love, I still cannot believe how quickly the tickets sold out and that people traveled across all the provinces,” said Sjava.
#ANightWithSjavaDurban proved to be a huge success with EDTEA KZN, SABC1, Gagasi FM, APM bus, AU Gold Vodka, Durban ICC and Ambitiouz Entertainment believing in the idea that gave birth to the triumph of the show.
